It's way past midnight and you're tired; a day of work that beat you like a boxer behind you, you long for that warm spot that feels right, next to the other half of your heart. You ache for the sleepy embrace of peaceful bliss. A chill runs up your spine as you breathe into your icy mitts. Coldest night of the year, you think as you pull your hood up to shield against the swirling wind.

Under a desolate street light stand two shadowy figures; one, a man, big and burly like a black bear, in a leather jacket and torn jeans, a man that strikes fear into the heart of the strongest and the most wicked; two, a woman, slight and innocent, her face weathered with worry and fear of what's to come. She poses no threat to anyone and seeks only to please those who she loves. She loves him.

He's upset; perhaps he lost his job, perhaps he lost his wallet, perhaps she didn't meet him on time; it doesn't matter at this point or maybe he's forgotten why. The lasting truth is that he's on the edge of something spectacular and you know it. With one swoop of his arm her greatest fear comes to fruition. It's not the body but the soul that bruises most, a scar that never heals; a wound that never covers.

You stand there, slight and filling with fear. You don't know either of them nor have you cared about either of them before. Your life has been a war of words and not blows. You aren't built to fight and you don't believe in it, yet the cards are about to be laid and there's nothing you can do to change your hand at this point. You've lost control and you've got to act on instinct.

He strikes and she falls; it's not the wind that's cutting at you at this point but your conscience, tearing at your heart and soul; you present no match for this bear, he will strike you and you will fall as well if he chooses. As it stands you can walk away, to that peaceful bliss and to your right place and try to forget what had happened, try to push it away like a bad dream or the bad day you've just had. Or you can stay and take a punishing beating that you do not deserve, that no person deserves. Your body may bruise, you may die, you may break a bone or you may end up in a coma depending on the depth of this bear's anger. Like a craps roll with your life; odds are you'll end up worse off for going over there.

Life's full of tough choices and brutal endings where no one wins. The consolation is that we can end this story whichever way we please. We control our own destiny and the destiny of others with our every decision. This story will never end up a happy one, however it isn't up to us to be constantly creating happy stories. We've just got to decide which endings to put on our stories and whatever leads from our choices is out of our control. Like an old dog trapped in a corner by wolves, sometimes all we have is the fight left inside us.

Sometimes that's enough.

I had a thesis all picked out for my doctorate; a combination of behavioural psychology and economic theory and their affects on consumption habits (based on observations that I'd made; obviously, I've done no research yet). Lower level books tend to have either a photo of someone in a field related to the subject or a slew of stereotypical equations and graphs that represent the subject. Advanced level books tend to be very simple designs that don't tell you anything about the content inside and tend to have boring titles that don't try to wow you one bit.

Interesting to note. Statistics, Calculus, International Trade and Sociology will be my friends for the next 48 hours. It's a good thing I'm in a learning and working mood otherwise I'd be fucked.

I spent most of the last two days working and doing assignments, of which I'm done of 1 1/2. 1/2 a stats assignment to do this afternoon, a long calculus assignment to do this afternoon/evening and then tomorrow will be the biggest study day of my life. I'm hoping to do the unthinkable and pull a couple of sweet marks out of my ass.

I also cancelled a job interview I had yesterday. I feel that with exams, with my December schedule and with Christmas break I'm not in a position to make any big life changes at this point. I don't need this new job; it would have been a nice change of pace but I am able to go in and squirrel away at my current job just fine. I've also got some other plans I'm working with at this point and really do not feel that I can handle a whole lot on my plate. I'm doing just fine right now, thanks.

I'm sure I'll come up with something alot better than this once I can start thinking again.

Fudgamawhosit.

My pet peeves include:

- Armchair "politicians" with a penchant for using 20/20 hindsight to point out their intellectual superiority to the current regime. Life's a craps roll; sometimes you win, sometimes you don't. Politics isn't going to ever be any different. Deal with it. Mistakes happen, even to those who are in power.

- Armchair "general managers" with a need to point out what they would have done differently than the general manager after it's not worked out. I don't think there are many people out there making trades in the mindframe that they are getting fleeced.

Seriously. It's very easy to sit on the side and critique, critique, critique, but when you're in the line of fire it's sometimes quite hard to step back and look at something in the most clear of lights. The pressure is immense and people will buckle under it once in a while. Give it a break. We are not doing our jobs with the same level of expectations that we put on our politicians.

I say this because the main critiques of Charlottetown's politicians today, on election day, are:

1)Not having the foresight/not taking the time to find out that the rink/pool was going to go way over budget.

2)Not rushing fast enough to implement a transit system in Charlottetown.

So, on one hand we're criticizing our politicians for rushing into a project while we also criticize them for dragging their feet on another. How do they win?

Human beings; that's what we all are, even politicians. Mistake-prone. I'd rather see our government be overly slow than speeding into a project like a transit system, which will require:

1) Restructuring one of the most central lifelines in Charlottetown (exactly how are we going to make University Ave. 4 lanes at the Credit Union? There are houses there that can't really move to fit a big bus lane in) and:

2) a solution which hasn't been feasibly worked out by anyone (we don't have the populous or the resources to support a fleet of large buses large enough so getting anywhere in Charlottetown is possible within a reasonable amount of time; say, a half hour. The studies which have been used comparitively have been in cities with at least 55,000 citizens. We have 40,000. That's a 38% difference in populus and the difference between a bus system that passes/fails).

You can sit here and tell me til you are blue in the face how convenient having a bus system is but we're just not big enough to support it so that it works for the majority of the taxpayers. Remember, there are taxpayers in Sherwood, Parkdale, West Royalty, Winsloe, who will not be able to use this service because we can't afford enough busses to transport these people to Charlottetown every half hour/hour. What do we say to these people who already have questions about the effectiveness of their tax dollars? Put up and shut up? I think not.

I've got a solution to this entire problem, in some respects:

1)Tax credits to those who choose to use eco-friendly transportation, as well as a revamping of the greater Charlottetown area to make the city more bicycle/rollerblade friendly. People like paying fewer taxes and if all they have to do is bike to work as opposed to driving then we'll see a few less cars on the road every day. It's not a golden solution, but it is a start to a healthier city. The city is NOT pedestrian friendly, however, and would require some severe changes as well as swift justice against motorists who choose to weild their vehicular-fortitude over pedestrians.

There's also a health benefit that would be great for the provincial government as well and therefore it may be possible to get some provincial funding for a project like this.

2)A city-supported free of charge taxi service for all citizens over the age of 55 and for those with a medical condition preventing them from driving/walking. Not a bus system, but a taxi service. It'd encourage seniors to not feel obliged to spend their already stretched dollars on maintaining a vehicle and would also create safer roads for all. Show your card, ride for free within the greater Charlottetown municipality. Seems pretty reasonable to me.

3)A fleet of 3-5 10 passenger vans that stop at various hot spots around Charlottetown during the day time hours with the possibility of expansion/contraction depending on demand. Again, not a bus system. The reasons for this are three-fold:

a)Swifter and more numerous stops. A 10 passenger van fleet would not require any restructuring of the city to meet the needs of a bus and would travel much faster around town. It'd take no longer than our current vehicles do and, with even a slightly reduced traffic load, may even be faster than our current system.

b)The low cost of a 10 passenger van would lead to more frequent stops at our main locations. Which would you rather; a bus that stops every 1 hour or a van that might be by every 20 mins? As well, if the vans were filling up at a rate that meant you had to wait for 1-2 vans before getting a ride, we'd obviously be more financially-abled to purchase vans and re-route our stops. If we increase the number of transports out there, we increase the flexibility with which we can use them. It provides us with the ability to constantly customize the system to the dynamics of human life.

c)If we over/under estimate our demand, we can sell/buy 10 passenger vans much easier and therefore the cost risk would fall dramatically. Repairs would be less expensive, training would be less expensive, riding in the vans would be less expensive (not just the per-ride fee, but the tax-cost of the system). It would prevent the hazardous front-end expense that a big bus system would enslave us with.

I honestly believe this system would be so much more effective for our wonderful city than a big city bus system. As well, this system could be coupled with a Stratford/Cornwall passenger-van system that integrates well into ours if they choose transportation. Public transit is a great idea, but let's take the time to customize our system to our own needs as opposed to rushing into a system that worked for someone else. There is no city quite like Charlottetown and we should not forget that when we choose projects.

Yep, I should be a politician.

School is getting crazy again and yet I refuse to give up my new, more improved sleep habits because I just feel better. Should be interesting, that's for sure.

Gotta find me a honky tonk bar that'll play this song:

I gotta get drunk, Lord, I can't stay sober
There's a lot of good people in town
and if you hear me holler, see me spendin' my dollars
I wouldn't think of lettin 'em down
Well, there's a lot of doctors keep telling me,
"Tom, brother, you better slow down,"
but there's more old drunks than there are old doctors
So I guess we'd better have another round

I Gotta Get Drunk, Willie Nelson

I got alot of spam messages to my main email account on Monday and Tuesday and thought I had lost my email to the spammers somehow (I generally keep my email addy close knit, I have a second email addy I use for cases where I'm not sure who is getting my email address and for net signups and registrations). I had absolutely no clue how it would have gotten around so quickly (I had close to 80 come to me on Tuesday) and they were mostly Mail Administrator messages (generally a sign that one would have a virus, however it's webmail and I don't have a virus so it puzzled me). As I checked the headers of these messages, it was sending mail with my address to dfleming@ various domains across the world. Since I deleted Tuesday's batch I have not recieved a single piece of spam (normal for me, I go weeks between spam messages at this point). Here's what I think happened:

There must be a strand of virus that takes the addresses you have in your contact list, copies their usernames and sends it to an ever growing list of domains it generates as it goes along. This is really weird because most times it will only spoof these messages from the infected person's email addy and not those who are on their contact list. Makes me feel uneasy now that my email addy can be lost by the lack of sense of someone I know and not my own misuse.

There's going to come a point in time where a "do not allow me to be added to a contact list" function will have to come along if Microsoft doesn't tighten up its security flaws.

Okay, audience poll time. Which is more important to a song's importance:

1)Songwriting talent.

2)Musical talent.

I've gone from one side to another on this one however I think I'm at the point now where I've come to love songwriters; storytellers, poets, wordsmiths; those who can craft a set of words to describe a smokey bar so that you can actually taste the ash on your lips. It's probably why I've been stuck on the classic country-blues artists for month now; Johnny Cash started it, then Emmy-Lou Harris, then Waylon Jennings, then the Carter family and now I'm stuck on Willie Nelson. It's not necessarily about great voices or great musicians; it's about people who have seen and done just about everything and have lived to tell it well.

Now, don't get me wrong, there are alot of fantastic musicians out there that I love simply because they make a fantastic sound but for my money it takes a good songwriter to make a timeless, important song. Musicians are fleeting but poets are everlasting. That's my two cents. Let's hear yours.

itscalledregret: i've decided i dont like halloween for the following reasons.. its an ugly holiday that gives creepy people the chance to be even creepier.. and ugly people the chance to be even uglier.

I've been keeping up on my sleeping the last couple of days and I feel infinitely better already, although most people I know still thinks I'm going to burn out at some point soon. I'm working on that. This week, sleep willing, I'm going to start running in the AM again; I've only run twice in the last 2 weeks after switching out of 6AM wakeup calls and if I can start holding reasonable bed times, I will be able to sacrifice that hour of sleep in the morning.

Yup, so I skipped the Hallowe'en pub in favour of an early bed time due to a nasty cold (I'm feeling much better, thank you). I didn't feel like drinking anyways and therefore would have felt completely out of place, plus I most likely would have missed my 8:30am Calculus class which was the most helpful class this year, I think. Normally I would have felt like I "missed out" on something by skipping the pub but I'm really not feeling that way. My body feels a bit better and I actually got things accomplished yesterday, which was good.

Job interview is Tuesday @ 3pm. I'm going in with a good attitude; if it's not exactly what I want, I always have a backup plan. It's nice holding all the cards for once. I'm not too worried either way, it'd be nice to move on from what I'm doing however I'm able to keep doing it if things don't satisfy me.

This certainly was a boring post. Let's spice it up:

I was in Calgary the summer of 2001 for a conference. It was the most fast-paced and over-the-top conference I've ever been to. My roommate was a boy from Northern Ireland; the stories he'd tell would leave you in stitches and, per the stereotype, he could drink anyone under the table. Cuss like a motherfucker but he was terrible at poker and lost a few good dollars on that trip. Half the time I never knew if he was serious or sarcastic which is a great place to be stuck.

My other two roommates were from the Bahamas and Grand Cayman. It was the most diverse bunch of people I'd ever been with, it was great. Watching a Bohemian man trying to teach a guy from Northern Ireland what "da bump and garind" was left most of us on the ground, it was great. For once, not the whitest boy in the group, heh.

Anyways, our room was pretty much Grand Central for the parties that week; alot of wild stuff happened that week in that room. I'm reminded of one time that sticks out in my head. There was this kid, Kyle, from Ontario I believe. He reminded me of someone back home a little bit; he was a little over the top in trying to fit in. Anyways, about 10 of us are sitting around a kitchen table passing a couple of quarts of various liquors around the table and playing poker and this kid, Kyle, cannot handle his shit whatsoever. He's also got this big thing for a girl from N.S that had latched on to me as her friend for the week (nice girl, we kept in touch regularily until she went of to Harvard on full scholarship....yeah, smart girl indeed) and was trying to impress her somehow. So anyways, a few of us are on our way out on the town for the night (trying to maintain a low profile, this was quite against the rules) when Kyle gets this great idea that he's going to touch the roof (which, mind you, was easily touchable, but he was kinda drunk). So he gets a running start ahead of all of us and jumps as high as he can...of course, he didn't gauge where the "Fire" sign was and cracked his head straight on that sign. He fell straight backwards and lay motionless on the ground. Somehow we supressed our laughter at the entire situation (he also put a hole in the dorm roof with his hand) to make sure he was okay. I'll tell ya, it's really difficult to tell a concussion vs. a drunken buffoon. He had a golf-ball sized bump on his head and, being the nice guys that we were, intead of taking him to his room and laying him down for the night, we got him to stand under the sign with his finger pointing up at it and we snapped some photos, one of which made the achievement photo album, I think. Good times at the expense of a few brain cells.

They don't lie when they tell you that your body NEEDS sleep.

I'm kinda sick for the second time this fall and the fourth time this year. The previous 4 years I was sick once total. The only big difference in my life at this point, other than an infecting girlfriend (heh, she gave me mono and a bad head cold right after it, although I did deserve them) is the fact I'm sleeping alot less than I used to. A combination of a heavy school workload, working 16-20 hours a week and having the internet in my room have cut my sleeping hours by about 1/3. This has gotta stop, so I'm taking some initiative:

1)No more late night MSN conversations on nights that I have to be awake in the morning. Actually, I just might log off MSN every night at 10:30 regardless of who/what's going on. We'll see how that works out.

2)No more afternoon movies every day; it's time to be doing homework then and not at 1am.

3)Time management. I know, I know...I'm going to go find out what that means first but I'm sure it'll be helpful.

4)Naps. Remember how we used to like them? Remember, we're a 20 year old senior citizen, let's start living like one.

On the plus side today, I did get an offer to interview for a job working with J, I got 95% on a macroeconomics exam I thought I'd for sure have gotten about 75% on and I got 86% on a half-assed stats assignment. Karma evens everything out.

I got no time to call the president, I gotta call my baby. Let's forget George for the night, I wanna speak to my baby.

I know it's cool to hate Flash and all, but remaking Fatboy Slim's Weapon of Choice video using a stick figure and doing such a breathtakingly good job of it deserves some respect. When they straighten out their FTP problems (knowing them, it could be a while...employee requests seem to be at the bottom of their pile most of the time), I'll post a sidebar link to the article and I'll update this post notifying as such. It's a good article if you own a Linksys Router and have fought with MSN's bitchy file transfer settings. It fills a void that's out there right now (there isn't one place to find the proper info for this; instead, I had to take pieces of info from about 8 forums just to get it running) and therefore compiling this info into one article will save a few people some time, which is great.

Edit: It's posted.

You can't convince me that Power Bars contain less than 33% pure lead. I have a Calculus quiz today that I shall rock like Uriah Heep.

I have so many half-finished projects on the go right now; I started writing an article on how to optimize your Linksys router for MSN file transer yesterday (not as easy as it sounds); I've been writing a personal guide to effectual blog design for months now that's probably about half finished; I've been meaning to rip all of my CD's to mp3 and setup a streaming music server for when I'm at school and working on the computers and in desperate need of good music. My parents are getting a new computer this which I'll have to add to the network (as well as backup their current hard drive) and I have countless movies/files to burn onto CD's. All I need is one storm day and most of this goes away. C'mon God, just one snowstorm!

It's good to be ambitious though; I'd die if I had nothing to do that inspired me. Little spurts of inspiration pave the way to finding that big inspiration. I feel good about the fact that I still haven't found what I'm looking for.

I need another concert soon though; Snoop in January seems way too far away.

Edit: I got so much done today, however I found out I have another stats assignment this week so I'll still be busy. Does the world ever stop turning?

Anyone who wants to buy me a great Christmas gift, this would be the perfect gift. Ann Coulter is the funniest:

"Why not go to war just for oil? We need oil. What do Hollywood celebrities imagine fuels their private jets? How do they think their cocaine is delivered to them?"

"Liberals hate America, they hate flag-wavers, they hate abortion opponents, they hate all religions except Islam, post 9/11. Even Islamic terrorists don't hate America like Liberals do. They don't have the energy. If they had that much energy, they'd have indoor plumbing by now."

Oh, if you don't know who Ann Coulter is, go here and read some of her archives. She's really a piece of work, I don't know where to start. No, wait I do. The best of the quotes:

We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. A night that involves a bus ride drinking Fireball out of a paper bag and saying what christmas means to us can't be bad, right? Plus, so much liquid coke that I thought my head was going to fry. Lifestyles of the drunk and uncomprehensible. Betcha HBO is all over that series.

If anyone wonders where I ended up, I went for a walk to sober up and I ended up at home. I was definitely too drunk to get up and sing "I Walk The Line", thank goodness I didn't go back to Checkers.

Where were you, Patti Smith? Geez, now that I've found you I never, never want to let you go. Punk rock and poetry straight out of N.Y.C cuts through me like a knife, it's so damn good. Why is it again I didn't go to CBGB's? Oh yeah, a 40 block walk at night in a city where I was intimidated into buying a 2 song, burnt rap CD of a guy on the street. Of course, if DaFear ever hits it big (aka, hooks up with 50 Cent, these days), I'm fucking rich. Heh, the guy was pointing to a picture in a magazine of some guy at a party that wasn't him (he claimed it was); he's more likely to get hit by 50 Cent's hummer than he is to make a hit.

I wrote this while drinking coffee and people watching between classes today:

Lowly Guitar Blues

Hey there mister,
With your hundred dollar bills,
Choking down your sympathy,
With your power and your pills,
We don't need your poison rain,
We don't need your life of shame,
We just need our lowly guitar blues.

Hey there lady,
With your prim and proper rules,
Choking down your shallow life,
With your makeup and your jewels,
We don't want to be the same,
We don't need that life of shame,
We just need our lowly guitar blues.

Hey there people,
With your never ending need,
Can't you see the world will fall,
To ever growing greed?
Me, I see through all those lies,
I don't need no alibis,
I just need my lowly guitar blues.

For something written in about 8 minutes while wet and uncomfortable, I like it alot. If you are too lazy to click through to the article, Vanessa has declared that her new record is going to be dark and "goth" and not "piano recital-y". The gem of this article comes about half way down where Ms. Carlton comes up with this brain twisting quip:

""Do you know what Wicca is? I believe in like spells and stuff like that. The Wicca in me has come out. "

Key part: I believe in like spells and stuff like that.

I'm pretty sure I've given wiccan all of 15 minutes of my time in this lifetime but from what I've read, spells have so very little to do with it. Also, using the word "like" and "Wicca" together probably gets you kicked out of the club and has your membership card ripped up.

Also, this was a personal favourite:

"I've been able to kind of just merge the Wicca and the Eighties chick"

Yes, and Jack Black has been able to kind of just merge James Dean and Hungry Hungry Hippo. You are neither of those things. 2k pop princess: yes. Edgy 80's chick: no. Edgy wiccan chick: no.

Vanessa? Remember, the only reason you were nominated for that Grammy was because you were a pop princess. Pop kids aren't going to like the goth. Goth kids aren't going to like the pop. You're committing career suicide, although, personally, I really don't think (given the above quotes) that's a bad thing. Keep it up. May I suggest a duet with Busta Rhymes?

Well, it is Tuesday and I figure it's a good time to post. I'm in between spurts of motivation to finish a Calculus assignment that makes me feel a wee bit stupid. Perhaps more class attendance is required. I've been working on that; I'm 5/5 so far this week; I know that it is only Tuesday, but I generally do miss at least one class by this time of the week. I know, I'm a lost cause for class attendance. I'm trying though I believe fate has other plans for me.

Yeah, so I got my Advanced Macroeconomics assignment back, worth 5% of the term; Ace #2 of the year, 100%. I did make a couple of stupid math mistakes on it but he knew that I was smart enough with this stuff to be able to omit those little errs. I get that midterm back on Thursday; I'm not sure how well I did on it, I could have gotten anywhere between 70-95% depending on how my crackpot theories pass with him.

I have a bit of a gripe with the university; what is with the Thursday night events? I mean, Halloween is Friday night; this gives the perfect chance to allow students to get through the week before getting them tanked beyond recognition. I understand that most likely it's a combination of:

a)The band, an AC/DC tribute band (I'm indifferent on this thought, if it's good I'll like it, if not, I'll probably be a drunken cynic) could not come on Friday, therefore they booked them for Thursday.

or

b)They don't want to compete with Myrons' Halloween festivities, although I wouldn't think they'd have a problem competing that night.

Nevertheless, their decision to go against the logical forced me to find someone to take my work shift, which I did, but frankly the money would have been nice to, you know, pay for all that drunken bliss. Whatever, I'll get blitzed regardless of when, where or how; that's dedication to a higher cause.

Alright, I am going back to the assignment. I was going to talk about my recent esthetic changes but then I slapped myself for being so vain to think that people want to read about that shit.

This has been your regular Public Service Announcement by the Dave Fleming Day-to-Day Committee.

If I was to say what was The Police's defining record, I'd have to go against the critics and say it's without a doubt 1980's Zenyatta Mondatta. Ultimately, I grew up on The Police and my father adamantly claims Synchronicity as the best album they ever made (as do most people). I've thought about it and discussed it with him and I think I have him seeing my point now. Yes, Zenyatta was a little rushed-to-record sounding and yes, as you hit the end of the record you start to see the beginnings of a band that is losing touch with one another, but there are a few pretty fucking fantastic tracks on this record.

Dave's top 5 Reasons Why Zenyatta is better than Synchronicity:

1)Stewart Copeland's drum lines are so much more in sync with Andy Summers' guitar playing. I found Synchronicity to be an album of the two playing against each other.
2)Singles comparison: In a battle between Don't Stand so Close to Me (Zenyatta) and Every Breath You Take (Synchronicity), I'll take the witchy, pedophile song over the stalker song if only for that first verse. Sting's voice never sounded better than on that first minute of Don't Stand.
3)Canary in a Coalmine is just a really awesome song to drive to at 100km/h singing your voice off (even if you'll never hit Sting's notes without a kick in the junk). I don't find that same type of power sing-along song on Synchronicity.
4)Driven to Tears. This song has a weird, stoner-esque, 60's guitar solo in it that I like a lot. Plus, when Sting performed this at Live Aid, it was probably my second favourite moment (other than the obvious, Bad by U2).
5)There's a song on Zenyatta that is 50% gibberish (De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da). It takes a special song to get away with that.

Question is: What would music be like today if The Police didn't break up? I honestly don't know.

God, how I love this layout.

It all started when I was perusing some old bookmarks I had and I ended up on Squidfingers, a site with some of the most fantastic background patterns out there. Anyways, I was not really looking to redesign my blog as I had just put a lot of work into validating my code last night, but I stumbled upon my current background and thought that I could do something wicked with it. I wrote up a markup and found an African font from 1001 Free Fonts and I was off. It's about 1 hour later and everything is looking groovy. I have a feeling this is the design I've been chasing with my countless redesigns. I love translating what is in my head onto the screen and the rare time it ends up matching my head design, I usually marvel over it for a little while.

I'll be playing around with the code to re-validate (I have a feeling there will be very minor details that will need to be changed) and then it's done.

This was definitely a good way to procrastinate. I wrote you over a month ago and haven't heard a God Damned word back from you. Have you become that selfish that you'd throw away one of your longest lasting friends in exchange for your nicely crafted drug habit? The fact that I even felt the need to post about it says something, doesn't it? Geez man, it's been 8 years of good and bad times that have been put to the test. Guess what dude; we've failed, apparantly.

Don't bother writing back at this point, I really don't feel like hearing from you right now. Damage done, lesson learned; hopefully you've learned something from this last year because I have learned alot about friendship by watching the mistakes you've made here. Your attitude of doing what's best for you is probably doing good things for your life but the few of us who have stuck by you throughout everything are kinda getting a raw deal here.

A positive spin on all of this is that I certainly cherish those one of a kind, strong, two-way friendships that I have with a few good kids alot more now. I've got hair straight out of Almost Famous, and Lindsay said that I'm starting to look like Jeff from Stillwater, which is a pretty damn good compliment.

Now check the date. Mmmhmm, it's 14 days from halloween.

I have 2 choices:

1)Let the beard grow, become the rockstar I so am inside and go as Jeff for halloween. Minuses include a girlfriend that hates the beard and the fact that I'll look more like a hippie than I do now.

2)Shave the beard, think of a different costume for halloween but make the girlfriend very happy. Now, note that she hasn't asked me to shave it, I can just read her like a book.

I have about 40 minutes to decide on what to do. It's a tough call, it really is.

Edit: I like my girlfriend. Doesn't seem too cool, does it? Anyways, I looked at the exam and it was comprised of 6 short answer and a choice of 2/3 longer, analytical problems. The analytical ones were scary; I knew how to do half of each of the first two, but the second half was a little foggy; the third, I probably could have bullshitted but definitely didn't want to have to. The 6 short answers; I knew 2 right off, 1 was pretty much all there in my head; the other three were touchy, scary problems. I felt a little bit queasy; I know how to do about 1/2 of the test, the rest I'd have to think through. I'm not used to that. So I start, and as it goes along I start to remember some stuff, I start to come up with some nutty, not quite right theories for things and I will probably do okay. Not as great as I thought I would, but the questions were not as I expected. Meh.

Tonight is calculus; I'm surprisingly calm about this one, I should be able to do great on it. I'll study some this afternoon, write the test, visit Lindsay for a little bit and then it's off to the Wave with Josh to watch Game 7 of the Red Sox-Yankees series (drama, oh yes), play pool and drink beer. Nice way to let go of a stressful period.

Back to the books. Oh, one thing, download "Let it Burn" by Bad Religion. I'd love to hear that song covered someday. Exams in Macro and in Calculus on Thursday; I'm not too worried, ultimately, I know what I'm doing in both subjects, so they should be cakewalks with a little review on my part.

The long weekend was good. Saturday was spent working, which was fine, I could use the money. Sunday was spent getting the last round of golf in for the year (I played the back 9 with nothing higher than a 7 iron and shot 50, not too bad considering: a)I hadn't swung a club in 1 1/2 years and b)there is only so far you can hit a 7 iron). Spent a little bit longer at the 19th hole than was expected and therefore dodgeball was not my best effort but it was still fun nonetheless. Monday was a lazy day, did some reading (finished Johnny Cash's autobiography, definitely a recommended read) and a little bit of studying. Then it was turkey time! All in all, a pretty low-key but still good weekend.

Now, it's off to hit the books once more and then to get my second go at the turkey. Gobble Gobble!

Away away
You have been banished
Your land is gone
And given me
And here I will spread my wings
Yes, I will call this home
What's this you say
You feel a right to remain
Then stay and I will bury you
What's that you say
Your father's spirit still lives in this place
I will silence you

Give thanks for all you have today, but remember: many lives were lost as we invaded the land we now call home. Today is a joyous day but it is important to keep in mind that buried deep below our houses, cars and posessions are the bodies of those who had their lives taken from them by a people who didn't belong here. Blood lost in such a way should be given its due respect and the dignity of being remembered.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. I was the first one done, as always (there were a few stares at how early I was done) but I think I got every question right; I might lose a point here or there for details that I left out/labels, etc., but that's going to be a really good mark. I'm happy too, I didn't really study much or attend class but I still learned everything I needed to know for that exam. I have a high retention rate, I know this.

I got stuck on my calculus assignment last night though; I'm having a tough time learning Maple. It's not as though I don't understand it, it's just that I need to get used to the syntax needed to get right answers. I think it'll come eventually to me, it's just a little foggy at this point. I got 83% on the calculus quiz we did this week, meaning my mark is hovering around a 90%, which is pretty fantastic considering that I haven't done any of this in 3 years. I have a midterm in calculus on Thursday night; apparantly the first midterm is quite basic and easy, so that bodes well for my mark. I also have Advanced Macroeconomics that morning, however I'm a machine at the macro theory and I should coast through that exam. Marks are looking pretty good, so far, other than Sociology, but what can you expect attending 1/3 classes?

Lindsay and I have been together 9 months today. Woot!

Time to get back to work. This week has left my bedroom in SHAMBLES and I have notes EVERYWHERE, so I ought to get on organizing this stuff.

If there ever was a product to purchase at a higher-end cost (other than Post-It's, of course), computer printers are definitely one you should consider. Not only for the increased quality of documents/photos, but also due to the way they age. For example; I own a low-end Hewlett Packard printer which I use primarily for text-based printing, a few graphs, nothing too fancy. My printer, however, in its third year of existance seems to have acquired the electronic version of Alzheimer's disease; it forgets to print pages out of documents; it picks up 3 and 4 pieces of paper at one time and prints parts of the document I requested on each, forcing me into 2 options: a)load paper into it one at a time; or b)play real-life cut and paste with unimportant documents; it chooses weird color schemes when I decide to venture out of greyscale (it's not lost the ability to print certain colors, it just chooses to print blue instead of red and then will print red instead of green. As well, this doesn't happen all the time, sometimes it will print some correct colors). It's quite alarming how it has slowly taken the control of my print jobs away from me as time presses on and forced its own new convoluted way of processing upon my documents. I believed my printer is destined for the loony bin, or at the very least, the loonie bin at Computer Resources.

Note: to all the people searching for Hurricaine Juan photos (I'm quite high up on MSN's search engine for "hurricaine juan photos"), I direct you to newrecruit.org for a list of personal photos available of the destruction this storm caused.

It's been a pretty tough week. I've been fueled with a combination of stress, urgency and caffeine for about 4 days now and it's going to feel really good Friday afternoon, somewhere around 1:30pm, when I can let myself breathe normally again. Lindsay and I spent an hour together yesterday afternoon, the longest amount of time we've spent together in about 5 days; a testament to how busy we are right now. I don't know what happened but I was not prepared for a week like this and it'll take a few days to recover, I'm sure.

One other facet of my life that took a nose-dive as a result of my strenuous week was my running. I had only run once, for about 3 kilometres, since Sunday. That changed last night; took myself out on a 10k run, the first time I've run that distance in about 2 years, and absolutely smashed it. I feel as strong and as healthy as I ever have right now and I definitely attribute that to my running schedule. I've probably added about a half inch of muscle to each of my legs since the beginning of September and my legs are showing some solid definition for the first time in years. I've not gotten into strengthening the rest of my body yet, but once I start finding a new routine in my life (I'm studying regularily for the first time in my life and it's definitely reducing my free time) I'll find a place for that as well. I've lost a lot of upper-body muscle over the last 2 years and it's time that I regain that strength. Plus, it couldn't hurt to put a pound or two on me; I certainly have a runner's body right now.

Did you notice the return of my favourite blog design? I found it cached on Google and took advantage of reclaiming my lost code. Woot!

I think I ought to go; Stats exam tonight that I need to prepare for and a Calculus assignment due tomorrow that apparently won't do itself.

What a dumb fucking assignment to spend the last 4 hours on and miss 2 classes for. Seriously, assignments where you are doing the same thing over and over should be optional, not marked. If I can prove I can do it on the hardest problem, why the hell should I have to prove it for the easy as hell ones? It's a load of rubbish is what it is.

Statistics and Accounting are the only two courses that I've loathed in the 24 courses I've taken so far in university. I'd say that's a pretty good average to be keeping. I'll make a chart here on how I've felt about my courses:

Very Good: 9
Good: 8
Fair: 5
Poor: 2

Of course, I'm missing one of those very good classes right now because of this bloody assignment. Oh well, the day off will give me time to put the pedal to the metal and get some serious work done to hopefully ease the pain this week is causing.

It's weeks like this that make me realize I don't get drunk often enough.

Time to get some more caffeine.

Prompted by a question that Lindsay asked me earlier:

If I had the choice to rename myself, I'd choose a good irish name (even though I'm only 1/4 irish); I'd probably end up naming myself Ailin(second "i" should have an accent but apparantly Blogger doesn't do extended ASCII very well), the gaelic word for "noble". I've always liked that name alot. I love how it rolls off the tongue of a thick, irish accent too.

So now you know.

Back from Halifax; tired, sick and happy.

Matchbox 20 put on a pretty fantastic concert. They were such genuinely nice guys and really gave the crowd exactly what they needed. Highlights include; Rob Thomas breaking into Wyclef Jean's "Gone 'til November", overactive cougars and Neil Young covers. I'm never going to be a fan of assigned seating (or indoor venues, for that matter) but generally, the concert was a pretty fab time.

Touring Halifax was an incredibly surreal experience. Seeing the amount of destruction that Hurricaine Juan laid on that city first-hand was chilling. I couldn't believe my eyes when I looked at the Public Gardens; just 6 months ago, I walked through, feeding ducks, watching a wedding and laying on the grass; today, it looks as though it will never be the same.

Some say they are just trees; I say that they are historical figures we've lost. Stories are made of storms like this and it's almost too much to process to wonder what things will be like without all these shadowy figures to watch over us. I dunno, perhaps I find some value in that which can't be replaced even if I took it for granted when it was here. I had heard we were getting rain, but I certainly didn't know we were getting a hurricaine. Wind-whipped rain cracked against the window like ice picks; the trees were bent sideways in a way I'd never seen before. All of a sudden, everything was a little quieter; the gentle hum of electrical current came to a halt. Everything was dark, except for the odd crack of lightning that would fill up the early morning sky. It was eerily calm inside as the weather furied outside.

This morning, around 6am or so (we still didn't have electricity so I didn't really know what time it was exactly), I got up to go for my run; more importantly, I wanted to see what mother nature had left us with after such a glorious display of her graceful power. It was indeed a sight; trees older than my grandparents were out of the ground; not broken, but uprooted. An entire house was covered in trees; 2 had hit the house (I stopped my run to make sure everyone inside was okay; they got lucky, only the garage had any significant damage). Power lines were everywhere; a run of 6 straight poles were lying side by side, like casualties of a powerful war waged. Reports on the radio (I'd reverted back to the old Pulser AM/FM 2-Band Radio, powered by 4 "D" batteries (its conception preceeds my own existance) for communication) said that parts of the Wharf were gone; 20 boats had sunk and another 50 or so were in a big pile in the harbour. Everything was cancelled for the morning; in a couple of hours, the grace of nature told us to slow down. Most complied with her wishes.

The part that I found so astounding was the difference in the operation of the world now that people had nowhere to be. We did have an election going on, but the driving was slower-paced (civilized driving with the traffic lights dead, what a sight THAT was) and people were generally taking their time to get where they were going; urgency was non-existant. Without electrical current, people had gone back 30 years to a time that I don't even know; I had my first cup of hot instant coffee made on a Coleman grill on the deck today and it was some good. I spent the rest of the morning reading by the window; the natural light, which my eyes were not used to, soothed my eyes as the pages ran by. The gentle rain was a relaxing sound as well. Peace was upon us.

Obviously, that peace has ended; this entry proves that some of us indeed have power (8 hours later and there are 2/3 of the island still in the dark; we're some of the lucky ones, if you consider it luck; I'm not so sure), however I didn't look forward to that familiar hum (which doesn't even register anymore on a day to day basis; power is a loud thing when you realize it is making a noise). In the next room, the television spits out the regular drivel.

I take great hapiness from the fact that, even for a few short hours, life was again simple and livin' was easy. It proves once again that, despite being a technically-inclined young adult, I'm indeed a cotton-picking, guitar slinging boy from the country at heart. It's good to remember your roots; it's a shame that it takes something so big as a hurricaine to take you back, but maybe I'll remember how good it was and take some time to come back here, once in a while.

Carl Carlson - 2002 - 2003
RIP

Carl Carlson, the little fighter of a fish who fought death for two days, gave up and passed away last night at 1am. This being said, I do have a couple of points on the subject:

1)Why is it that, when discussing all other subjects but religion, things are being "taught" to students; yet, when we even remotely venture into a religious zone, it suddenly changes to "pushing" things on students. Newsflash: there are people out there who follow a religion and are not zealots. It can be taught, like evolutionary theory, objectively and fairly without "brainwashing" the kids.

2)Yes, there are many religions and sects out there. Yes, we would never be able to give students the basics on all of these religions so they can make a fair judgement. But do we do that for political science? Do we teach communism in schools? Do we teach detailed socialism? No. We teach based on what the popular view is. In a democratic country, we teach democracy. In a majority christian country, we'd teach christianity. Minority views and theories on subjects are something you learn in higher learning institutions. I learned about many eastern religions (and philosophy) when I went to university. I learned about communism when I went to university. It's advanced learning to be taught at an advanced level learning facility to those with an interest.

3)I, personally, don't believe evolutionary theory. I don't believe in the big bang because it goes against my belief that there is a God that created and sustains. I was taught both of these theories, however, during my time in school. It could have turned me against my religion and against my parent's values. It didn't; I was strong enough in my faith to learn other theories and refute them. Why is religion any different?

Done the right way, teaching children fundamental christianity could be a fulfilling, developping and ultimately worthwhile subject to be taught in school. Teaching children at a young age to love thy neighbor is something that seems to be lacking in a generation of gossipers and violence-first response tactics. This being said, like any other subject, there needs to be regulation on how far the teaching goes. We can't let political science profs teach people that the nazi movement was anything but evil and we can't have profs telling kids that homosexuals are bad people. It's all about balance and fair teaching and I think that religion has a place in public schools if we teach it well.

Dave, Lindsay and Nicole @ Matchbox 20, with special guests The Push Stars, October 3rd, 7:30pm @ Halifax Metro Centre.

Scrumptious.

I am really, really guilty of expecting things out of others that I don't expect out of myself. Things that I do that I justify as part of who I am, I get hung up on when other people do them. Why am I such a hypocrite? I can't figure it out, I wonder if everyone else is as bad as I am at this or if I just haven't seen "the light" on this one.

I think I ought to sit down and figure out what I really want; out of me, out of everybody else, then make a decision on what I'm going to do based on what I find. I updated it last week and I realized one of the most useful functions that an e-resume can provide; links. I've got all my previous employers linked. I've also got all of the awards that I won for Mathematics through Waterloo University and my Junior Achievement awards linked as well. It provides an employer to look back at what these awards were for, instead of looking at some arbitrary words and names and making a personal decision on what that award entailed and its importance. It enables me to omit some of the info I'd normally add about the awards; instead, I can shorten the resume and still provide the more detailed, external info.

I'm so very happy with my new resume. It's printer friendly and provides a lot of background info on the stuff I've done, while at the same time limiting its length.

2 Notes to Myself:

1)Stop eating so much sugar, your mouth hurts for a reason.

2)You've got to stop doing this job.

The foam party turned out EXACTLY the opposite of the way I thought it would.

First, I ditched the predrinking in exchange for bumming a ride to the university, meaning I was STONE COLD SOBER.

Second, the foam mess was actually controlled, really fun and incredibly hot. Save a few jerks who were pushing people, it was a big group of people bouncing to music while being completely wet and happy. It was a pretty fantastic night.

After that, it was off to Nicole's for pizza and Dirty Dancing...the movie, that is. Still one of my favourite movies of all time and Baby was my first crush as a kid (well, second....but I don't think a cartoon counts, does it?). I really need to learn to dance like that too, Patrick Swayze makes it look so cool.

Wake up this morning and off to work, hopefully back out again tonight. Basically, they are building an artificial building inside of a building, filling it up with some sort of soapy mess and hoping the patrons inside will end up in some sort of drunken orgy. It's going to go off terribly, I can already tell. I have a ticket to it, though.

I, however, am stuck at work.

Does this deter the committed? Of course not. In typical Dave fashion, I'll be walking to school drinking a pint of straight alcohol as I walk. By almost, I mean I have never been that close to something moving that fast. By almost, I mean that 2 people stopped their cars on University Ave. asking if I was okay and if I had gotten hit by the side mirror, shaken that they thought they were going to see a horrific accident. Weird because I tend to never look up when I'm bopping along. Feeling extremely lucky that I did.

Religious experiences are really cool. Eerie as it is, I loaded my mp3 player up with songs from the Man in Black 1 week ago, the first time I'd listened to that country sound in months. Every day, I'd run to Ring of Fire, I'd walk to school tapping my feet to Rusty Cage and I'd sit and think to I Walked the Line. Last night, after getting dropped off by Lindsay, I thought about what makes J.R Cash so special to me.

Growing up with a father who found Zeppelin to be a calling, I was born into 60 and 70's rock and roll. My dad said that the first album I ever heard as a child was most likely something by The Who. It was the way I was bred and it'll be the way I die.

Now, being a kid who grew up in rock and roll, I couldn't see the good in certain types of music, namely rock's softer, whinier cousin; country. As a kid, my mom would turn to CMT and I'd run out of the room. Billy Ray Cyrus made me ill. It was the way I was; I vowed to never, ever listen to country. For a long time, I kept that vow.

As I grew and downloading music became the way I acquired music, I started experimenting with the great artists that I never really understood; The Beatles, Tom Petty, Frank Sinatra, etc. I would try to see what was so good about each of these artists; some, it became obvious; others are still a mystery.

Johnny Cash was one of those artists. Knowing him only as a rough and tough country singer, I downloaded a few tunes I knew; one, Long Black Veil, stuck with me; the rest I dismissed as country music without even giving them a second chance. My distaste for that genre of music prevented me from being open to this music.

About a year ago, I gave Johnny another shot; this time, he hit home big time. His music was real, honest and full of passion. Songs about being in jail (hell, he recorded an album in the big house, that's one of the cooler stories I've heard), songs about temptation, songs about abuse, songs about love and songs about hate; Johnny Cash had seen it all and lived to tell about it.

It wasn't his music, however, that impressed me so. It was in the way that he lived his life that reached me. He seemed to always be himself, no matter what the cost or the gain that would come from it. He fought a lot of tough fights in his lifetime. His faith really, really impresses me. His marriage was one of the most amazing love stories I've ever had the priviledge of knowing about. In summation, there were a lot of things that I saw in Johnny Cash that I strive to see in myself. It's amazing; as a general rule, I don't spend a lot of time idolizing people, but Johnny Cash was one person who I found it very hard not to think that highly of. There'll never be another Johnny Cash; music died a little bit yesterday.

Yeah, so surprisingly yesterday was a really tough day, I couldn't even watch tributes to him without feeling sad. I watched one of the last times he ever appeared on TV today, it was pretty touching...he and June, his wife, sang I Walked the Line...that was some powerful stuff, seeing the two of them together and realizing they aren't here anymore. It all made me feel so very mortal; seeing an influential person in my life pass on makes me feel like I'm not so invincible.

We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know
We'll meet again
Some sunny day

- We'll Meet Again, Johnny Cash

Watching the video for Hurt today really put a lump in my throat.

God bless you, Johnny Cash. After 2 weeks, he decided that it wasn't fair to completely keep me off the internet because I need it to do some of my schoolwork; therefore, we changed the rules in that I am only banned from the internet after 11pm. This means I'll be able to access all of the resources I'm used to and I'll be a lot more diligent with my email writing. I have been on these new rules for about 3 days now and I find that I'm not on the computer anywhere near as much as I used to be. The break got me interested in other things besides the internet. (By the way, he's doing fantastic so far...I'm quite happy about that.)

I've decided to give blogging a go because I am able to write in the privacy of my bedroom again. I find it very hard to blog from work most of the time; it's not only busy but also very difficult to concentrate. That will lead to higher interest being paid to you as your bank account will hit the first of the month at the maximum amount possible for your income and will pay you "cash money" for that big, bad account balance.

If you get a TD GM Card, you don't have an annual fee and you make GM dollars. For those of you who don't know where I've been, I went on a road trip with 7 people to a little spot where the talkin' is french and the liquor flows from the gas stations and supermarkets: la belle ville, Montreal.

The Radiohead concert started out crazily. Walking 10 minutes from the start to end of the line waiting to get in was wild, I'd estimate that 60k+ people made it out on that dangerously hot day. We got a fantastic spot though, 30 rows of people back and a little right of center. The main microphone was right in my vision.

The Jicks were good, but I think the anticipation of the headline band really took away from the appeal.

Then there was the reggae. As they were switching sets, some moron decided to play the same reggae song (well, most reggae sounds a lot alike, doesn't it?) for 45 minutes while the good people set up for Radiohead. Between every song, there was a delay of a few seconds that made everyone think "finally, Radiohead" before the song would loop back and play again. I swear, they were torturing us on purpose.

Oh, but it was so worth it. Ed lead the group of 5 onto the stage. The crowd was losing it.

2+2=5.

23 songs later, with my legs and my back telling me that they will hate me forever, we went to grab some merch and head back to the apartment on the metro. Silence, because frankly, what could I say?

Thanks guys and gals, that's going in the permanent memory box. Pictures to come as I unpack and find my camera.

All I got is a red guitar
Three chords, and the truth
All I got is a red guitar
The rest is up to you

I can't believe someone registered this domain. I've not done much like this before, so it's been a really full day of learning. The layout is really good right now, I'm incredibly happy with how professional it looks. All I have left, really, is to weed out some of the content and cut out parts to make it all fit in, place the articles and proofread the fuck out of it. It's pretty cool though, I'll definitely keep a copy for my life scrapbook. This makes me want to do some work with The Cadre this year maybe.

I'm at work alone right now, just about to lock the place up. It's been a busy few days and I'm looking forward to kicking my feet up at home for most of the night and getting a long run in. I'm back on my fitness kick after 2 weeks of falling off the wagon.

I'm off. Have a good day.

Like, honestly: why am I here?

Fuck you, Lou Perlman. I used to write little snippits of things that popped into my head in those moments between sleep and completely conscious wake. The funniest part about them is that they seem like they are written by someone else, ink dried from someone else's pen. It's really weird. Anyways, here are a couple I found to be the weirdest:

1.Hey pretty lady, don't be so sad, it's dark and it's wet but there's life to be had.

2.Follow me down, down to the place, the start of it all, the end of the race.

This one, I just find really odd in the fact that I know who I was trying to write like, but unlike most times where I can emulate someone else's writing style quite well, I failed pretty miserably.

3.They're selling happiness for $29.99,
Plus taxes, of course, for there's no perfect crime."

This is, in no way, anything that I have written that I find acceptable. These are just weird little things I've found today.

Remember when I got ordained and I called myself Rev for a couple of months?

What is with the last name "Ng"? It's a subscription based bot that sends you a message when any of your chosen blogs have been updated. Currently, it reads the Weblogs.com and Blogger feeds. I've been playing around with it and it really is a kick as application. It is easy to setup; all you have to do is add the blogchangebot screen name to your AIM list (works with Trillian too) and then subscribe each of the blogs you read. Every time a blog is updated, within 15 mins you get a message telling you which blogs have been updated. Ultimately, it will save me valuable surfing time; instead of going through my endless list of weblogs, I can just log into Trillian and get a message telling me which blogs have been updated. Check it out.

I am really glad that I switched all of my banking services over to PC Financial about 2 years back. After today's events, I will be switching my credit card over as well.

I spent part of the morning trying to setup EasyWeb Access with my TD GM Visa. I remembered how simple setting it up online with PC Bank was, therefore I would have assumed that it would be the same at TD. I first found out that at TD, you actually had to call a customer service representative in order to set this access up. I was wary from this because the TD online system must be primitive enough that they can't even sign you up for these types of services online. I placed a call to the number provided and waited on hold for a short while. I gave the woman my card information, residence information and security information. She followed this up with a "quick" identification questionaire. The questionaire ended up being 17 questions long, of which I didn't answer one correctly, because frankly I can't remember. Several questions included:

- What was the last transaction made on your VISA card?

- What was the exact amount of the transaction?

- What was the exact amount of the last payment on the card?

See, these types of questions were why I was setting up the EasyWeb Access; I just don't know. Who does? If I pop into a diner and put it on my card yesterday, I won't remember today whether I charged it or paid in cash.

Ultimately, I got one of the questions wrong, so I don't get the chance to use EasyWeb Access. Security is very important, I'll never put down being secure, but if you are secure to the point where the actual card holders cannot access their services, something has got to change. I'm going to wait til my statement gets here, then I'm going to pay off my visa and cancel the card. I remember now why I moved from TD to PC financial in the first place; TD just didn't seem to like people, it seems to only like the protocol that kept them in line. There's no room for human error, no room for memory loss. I feel like I've just been through the memory gauntlet and still haven't gotten the service I needed. That's why I'll switch. It's pretty cool, I think. It's simple, which I usually prefer. We'll see how long it lasts.

I'm a bit stressed out these days. I'm looking at my school schedule and seeing that if even one of my classes fills up before I can register, I may be completely fudged for my degree. The joys of being down 1 class going into 3rd year. I'm also stressed because the old job seems to be unresponsive to my needs as an employee. If you don't know the story, I'll present it again.

Summer begins, I talk to the old job about going from 20 hours a week to 40 for the summer again. They inform me that they aren't busy enough to do that, I'll get 16 per week for the summer, guaranteed. I develop a 2 week grudge, vowing to finally rid myself of that job. Instead, I go and get a 30 hour a week job that I like under the premise that I can work 12 hours per week for the rest of the summer, freeing up hours for people at the old job who need it and giving me a 42 hour work week.

First week at the new job, the old job schedules me for 17.5 hours. I send an email saying I can't work that much, my H.R member says she'll take care of it. Second week, 17.5 hours. Another email. No response this time. Next week, 18 hours. Yet another email. No response. This week, 19.5 hours. A slightly annoyed email saying that I need this taken care of or I will burn out by the end of the summer. No response so far after 1 day.

It's only frustrating because it seems as though noone is listening to me; instead, they solely hear the bottom line calling their names. Business is booming in there these days, and as such, they are working their employees like the union-less dogs they've created. They magically change people from 37.5 to 47.5 hour weeks with 1 day notice. Shifts that were to be 8 hours in length increase by 1 hour with 6 hours notice. They change their firm "noone is allowed to work overtime" rule to a "please, work overtime" rule in a matter of moments.

I think these are the types of things that drove me away from the business program in university. While I am an aspiring entrepreneur, I don't want to play these types of games with my future employees. I want them to love their jobs because they feel like they are treated with the respect they've earned from their loyalty. After living in this type of loyalty-less environment, it's made me appreciate the truly good employers out there. It's not about cake once a month, annual raises and company mugs for performers; it's about the little things the old job doesn't do; notice when things are going to change, apologies when things are going to change badly and, above all, a forum for discussion on company policy that isn't a web form to nowhere. Personalize, handle each employee like you do your customers. After all, you are only as good as your employees think of you.

It's only been 3 days since I posted? Wow, times flies.

Last night was a ridiculously fun night, drinking Red Bull and Rum in a treehouse is certainly something I can cross off my list of things to do. Drank a lot more than I thought I would, but that's a good thing. Shout out's to Aine for introducing me to this ball of fire group. Girl growwwl never sounded so good.
4)Seven Days a Week by The Sounds. It's like Wilson Phillips meets Roxette meets Cyndi Lauper....and it sounds good....somehow.
3)Break-Out Town by Tokyo Sex Destruction. Points for the band name. Points for throwing "hey hey hey" into every song. Points for crude, loud punk rock.
2)Jason's Basement by The Gossip. What is it with me and fem-angst bands these days? Mon dieu, I could listen to Beth scream for a very, very long time.
1)Shake the Dope Out by The Warlocks. I honestly have no clue what to think of these guys. I think they are in the wrong era of music but I can't place them in the right era. Whatever. They're pretty cool.

This has been a delightful filler post brought to you by 4 cups of tea, 2 hours of sleep and the letter Q.

Charlottetown.Cityfilter.org is a web community for people living in/interested in Charlottetown and blogging.
